Pain, Explained
Free · Wednesday July 15 · 7–9pm
Finnish Hall Auditorium, Berkeley
There's a good chance that no one has ever actually explained to you how pain works.
Pain science has changed dramatically in the past ten years, and most people in pain have not been updated.
In this interactive workshop, we're bringing together two hours of current pain science for anyone who's tired of not understanding what's happening in their body. We'll cover how the research has evolved, what the current model actually says, and where in the process of pain it's possible to intervene.
Pain is biological, psychological, and social. All three matter, but most people are only ever given one piece of the story. We'll break down the biopsychosocial model in plain language so you can leave with a new understanding of your pain–and some ideas for how to move through it.
We'll also make space for something that's harder to find: time to be in a room with other people who get it.
This workshop is for anyone with a body, because all bodies experience pain–the athlete nursing a tweaked hamstring, the person managing pain that’s lasted for years, and everyone in between.
We all have pain. Wouldn’t you like to know what it is?
Hosted by Sara Bissell Rubin, PhD & Jaimie Harrow, DPT
A medical sociologist and chronic pain educator, Sara received her PhD from UCSF. There, she studied how neuroscience makes sense of pain and how those understandings shape the way we think about and treat it. Before that, she was a clinical bodyworker providing hands-on care for people with severe chronic pain and PTSD. During grad school, Sara developed her own chronic pain condition, which lent a layer of urgency and fervent curiosity to her research topic. She brings these three ways of knowing - academic, somatic, and lived experience - to her work as she guides individuals and groups towards finding their own resolution from chronic pain.
Jaimie brings a special focus on education to his physical therapy practice, prioritizing an understanding of the concepts underlying the treatment to drive a cooperative clinical approach. Specializing in alternative sports and orthopedics, chronic pain, and functional wellness Jaimie aims to help everyone find all the possibilities their body is capable of.
